Thanks to a solid team performance, the U18 girls are back where they belong in Premier Division.
It was a pressure filled day in which things could have gone South, but they didn't. Middles Corey Crossan and Francis Ruiz established solid blocks which allowed Kristina Ing and the rest of the back row to play some solid defense.
Mackenzie Lawrence was player of the day with her consistent error free offense and scrappy defense.
We are pleased to be back in premier division and look forward to contending for the Provincial title!

Coach's Comments:

A tough 3 set loss to the South County Bandits resulted in us being demoted out of the Premier Division.
While we showed moments that revealed how well we can play, the inconsistencies were our undoing.
We definitely will be looking forward to our return to where we know we can play. Hard work will be the order of the day.

The Girls 18U Green team returned to Tier 1 competition after a brief stint in the Championship division. Their opening match saw them up against the eventual gold medal winners of the tournament - Durham Attack. The hiatus from Tier 1 play showed in the opening moments of the match as our girls struggled with the faster, stronger, play.
In the second round of pool play the team played the K-W Predators. After winning the first set with good net play from Corey Crossan and Frances Ruiz, and some solid defense from Jen Black, the team came out flat in the second set and were forced into a third set tiebreaker. It came down to the wire, and some key serves and a gutsy line attack from Mackenzie Lawrence sealed the victory 16-14, and gave the girls a second-place finish in the pool.
Fate was unkind in our cross-over, pre-quarter match, as we faced the Georgetown Impact. Our opponents had finished first and second in the previous two Tier 1 tournaments, and were matched up against us only because of a third-place finish in their pool play. Again, the girls played a strong match, and benefited from aggressive power attacks from Colleen Morelli, and solid blocks from Allie Peters to force a third-and-deciding set in the match. At the turn, Forest City was ahead 8-7, but then faced the powerhouse serves of the Georgetown setter. Unable to pass serve to sideout, the girls quickly fell behind 12-8. Two timeouts and several substitutions were not successful in stemming the Georgetown attack and we lost 9-15.
With that defeat, FCVC faced the unpleasant reality of having to win their final match to remain in Tier 1. Fortunately, this threat motivated the players to their best match of the day, as they handled the Etobicoke Wildcats easily, winning 25-12 and 25-10.
In the end, the team faced the eventual gold, silver, and bronze medal winners, beating one, and losing a close match to another. Good things to build on for the remainder of the season.
