Coach's Comments:
U16 Provincial Championships. A very long, but extremely exciting indoor volleyball season has come to an end. Our team took part in the U16 Provincial Championship this past weekend in Milton. Based on a curious OVA seeding system, we were assigned to Tier 5. This proved to be unfair to us and the rest of the teams at the tournament.

All 12 girls were pumped and ready for action. With the girls split into two squads, we won every set in pool play. The girls played a disciplined game and made very few unforced errors.

The playoffs ended up being more of the same, with very lopsided scores the rest of the day. Our girls did learn that at every level, one team needs to win. It may as well be them. Congrat’s on you Gold medal.

This was our second gold medal of the season and our athlete’s coaches and parents couldn’t be any prouder of them.

I want to take a moment to say farewell to one of our rookie players. Melissa Ryskamp, of Saunders HS, and her family are moving to Seattle at the end of the school year. Melissa came to us in September as a shy, quiet girl, keen to learn all she could about our game. As a coach, I never know when my efforts to develop new players will pay off. Well, if you saw Melissa’s performance this past weekend, you would agree that she has found her comfort zone. Her “going-away-present” to her team was the performance of her FCVC career. Melissa’s blocking and passing out of the back row has never been better. Ask her about her game winning kill. I’m sure she’ll be proud to tell you about it in great detail. You will always be able to remember you were part of one of the nicest group of athletes I have ever coached. . Good luck Melissa.

On a personal note, I want to thank Kathy and Frank Van Sas for keeping us organized this year. Being a team manager is a tough job and you did it with class!

Thanks to Erin Miller for helping our girls on Thursdays during a busy university schedule.

Finally, Eileen and I look forward to a summer of never hearing “My name is Jenn and you know what I’ve got…!

Tournament Results: 6th

Coach's Comments:
The end of a long U15 season has come to an end. There is no doubt that this group of 6 rookies and 6 second year athletes has had a successful year. The new girls were welcomed without question. The team morale has been positive every minute we were together. This made the integration of new with old, the keen with the skilled an easy progression.

The coaches had a vision at the beginning of the season. The vision was blurred every now and then, but we kept our focus and kept moving forward. There is no doubt we are a Tier II team. How we fit in at this level was decided this past weekend. Seeded 9th, we won our pool, defeating the top seeded team in the tournament to get there. Our first play-off round went very well, winning two game straight. We then came up against a small but determined Durham U14 team, winning the first game 25-16. Then the wheels fell off our wagon. We lost the next two sets convincingly to Durham, who went on to win the tournament. We continued to play inspired volleyball, finishing 7th by the end of the weekend.

This team has never had so many Dads’ out supporting their little girls! Tom’s inspired linesmanship, John’s awkward digs during warm-ups and Bill getting cussed out by an opposition player made the long trip to Petawawa even more entertaining.

Every one of these athletes has improved dramatically over the year. Who would have thought that Kaitlin would become such a powerful defensive player, or that Hillary would ever be able to control a serve and a roll shot so well? Christine and Meghan maintained their best passing-left-side-hitter distinction, and Natalie picked this weekend to have the game of her career. Setters Jenn (OVA Award Winner) and Kelsey ran great offences but never forgot to play defense. Laura unleashed her inner animal and crushed a few balls and opposition players from the middle, while rookies Melissa and Brooke showed they were ready to step in and make a contribution. Natasha showed that determination pays off, by making a major contribution in the last couple of games of the weekend. Last, but not least, rookie Rachel proved she had earned her spot as one of our best blocking middles.

Finally, all of this wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun if Frank and Kathy Van Sas hadn’t been there to organize the off-court travel and entertainment.

Thanks to all of you for an enjoyable season and I hope to see all of you back in the fall.

Bob and Eileen

Coach's Comments:
This tournament was our team's coming of age event. Everyone pulled together to finish second in pool play, losing to a strong Riverside in two weakly played games. We haven't been able to stay with them yet, losing in a previous tournament in two straight. The volleyball "good luck fairy" must have sprinkled some of her dust on our girls. We had some very good competition in the post pool play games, but were able to find our rhythm and sailed through to the gold medal match. We show up in the gym to find out we're matched up against the Riverside team from Windsor...again. Our girls found a way to dig deep and won the first game in a nail-biter. We fell apart in game two and were forced to a third game. Our FCVC team crept ahead early and were able to maintain the lead right to the end. Could just one session with a sports psychologist really make a difference in our playing ability? I wouldn't bet against it.
At this age level, the two things that make the difference in winning and losing are serving and ball control. Today we had both.

Honourable mentions:
Laura for taking on the roll as team leader.
Brooke for here new arm swing and unbelievable blocking.
Jenn and Kesley for sharing the setting responsibilities.
Meghan, Christine, Hillary and Natasha for being consistant throughout the day.
Rachel for keeping an eye on wildly hit balls.
Melissa for adapting to playing two different positions.
Natalie for finding ball control on her hits and serves.

Coach's Comments:
We travelled to snowy Barrie, this week with high expectations. Our practices went well the week before and a guest coach even got the girls more revved up on Thursday. With so many two-point games lost, we were definitely in the fight in every match. Now we have to learn how to find a way to get those final points needed to win. IT'S NOT EASY! Once again, it was a team effort, win or lose. Our returning players all showed their experience, but the newbies are starting to prove that they are catching up fast. Our progress has been steady and if we keep our eye on the prize, we should be able to medal in Tier II by the end of the season. Expect some positive reports after the U16 tournament next weekend in Sarnia.

Coach's Comments:
Coming into this tournament our goals were more team specific than result oriented. We learned this early in the day by getting spanked by our own U16 Green team. They are awesome and ended "unofficially" first on the day. Our goals were to improve each players individual and team performance. I will leave it to those who were there to judge. Knowing we were to play five matches, the coaches would have been thrilled with a couple of wins. Our setters improved through the day and could have been interchanged equally when needed. Thanks to Kelsey, Hillary and Meghan for testing the role of libero. They were great. Having them in this roll was one of the reasons for our success. With 3 rookie middles, and Laura our old pro, the blocking was unbelievable. Melissa, Jonesy and Brooke were tested often and improved dramatically over the day. Our power hitters delivered precise hits with very few errors.
Another goal met! Over all, it was our defense that mattered. The coaches reinforced all week, if we can't pass we'll never get a chance to attack. Mission accomplished. Now we have to build on our successes.

Coach's Comments:
Whew!
We survived our first tournament. Much to the coach's surprise, this team is going to be really good. Jenn, Kelsey and Kaitlin are mastering the art of setting. By the end of the day, all 3 girls were becoming consistant at getting the ball to their target. Led by Laura, Melissa, Brooke and Rachel were blocking machines in the middle. They put up an impenetrable wall and were ruthless when an overpass came their way. If the 3 rookies continue to improve this quickly, the Blue team will be even stronger. Natalie, our lone lefty, served bombs and passed and attacked like an old pro. At power, Christine, Hillary and Meghan showed their experience by attaking well and playing inspired defense. Our newest power player, Natasha, is showing lots of promise with good ball control and strong attacking. Our goal, to have consistant serving, was accomplished. We saw tough, consistant first serves, with few missed balls. For a first tournament with half of the team new to the game, we did well, but still have a lot to learn. Our best days are yet to come.
