The Girls 14U Blue team travelled to Brock University in St. Catharine’s to compete in top tier in the west of the OVA 14U division. In their first match they faced the top-ranked Toronto West team and came out with a spirited and fearless performance, pushing their competition to the brink in the first set and giving them a scare in the second. We saw in that match that we have the skill and determination necessary to hold our own against any team in the province. In the second match against the eventual tournament silver-medallists, the team played a strong and consistent serving and passing match to win in two straight sets. Although we lost 1st place in the pool on point spread, we were happy to finish 2nd in the pool and prepared to take on our opponents in the pre-quarter match. Uh oh! It’s the FCVC 14U Green team again!! Having played them twice – and lost twice – in the previous tournament, the girls were confident they could put together a better performance and pulled off an upset against their intra-club rivals. A strong start put us ahead 1-0 in sets and we out strong in the second set, putting pressure on the Green team. Ultimately, we lost a little bit of our fearlessness and let the other team back into the match, forcing a third and deciding set. The opposition jumped out to an early lead, which we chipped away at with some strong, aggressive play. Unfortunately, we ran out of time in our comeback and dropped the third set to the deserving Green team, who went on to challenge for a Bronze medal. In the final match of the day we faced a rejuvenated Toronto West team, who demonstrated why they deserved their incoming top-rank and who handed us a disappointing loss which relegated us back to the lower tier. Not to worry girls! We will regroup, continue to work hard, have fun and be back soon to challenge the top teams again. Go Blue!!!

The girls 14U Blue team took to the court at Saunders for their first official OVA tournament together. Although they were a little bit shell-shocked in their first outing against the very strong FCVC 14U Green team, the girls regrouped with very strong performances in their remaining pool-play, pre-quarter and quarter final matches. We faced a strong, confident and top-ranked Predators 14U team in the semi-final match. The winner of this match would not only be guaranteed a medal, but would also move up to the top tier for the next tournament. The team worked hard and played consistent, aggressive and confident volleyball to win the match in two straight sets, sending the Predators to the bronze medal game and the FCVC girls to a rematch in the finals against the FCVC 14U Green Team. Having gotten the nerves out in the early morning match, the girls came out much more relaxed and confident in the final and - although we didn't get the gold, - the girls should be proud of themselves for an outstanding silver-medal performance. Way to go Blue!!
