FOREST CITY VOLLEYBALL CLUB ATHLETES SHOW WELL AT ONTARIO SUMMER GAMES
|
Location:
|
Ottawa
|
|
Date:
|
August 10, 2006
|
|
This year the bi-annual Ontario Summer Games took place in Ottawa.
Over 250 athletes from Region 3 (southwestern Ontario from Niagara Falls to Windsor)tried out for 2 girls and 2 boys teams of 10 atheletes per team.
Picking these teams was a thankless job. When all the dust settled, five of the 20 girls selected and 8 of the 20 guys selected were from FCVC. We have to be proud of the determination these people showed in demonstrating their best volleyball skills.
These indoor athletes included:
U15 - T.J. Sanders (S), Bryan Duquette (L), Peter Scholtes (MB)
U16 - Michael Wright (MB), Michael Hancox (LS), Daniel Hammond (S), Adam Drapala (RS), Jeff Dittmer (L), U15 Johanna Ovsenek, U15 Christina Grail, U15 Georgia Robinson, U16 Angela Whitcomb, U16 Chrissy Wilson and U15 Marie-Eve Tremblay (alternate).
Three of the four coaches chosen to run these teams are also from FCVC. Dennis Dlouhy R3 White Team, Bruce Estabrook R3 Purple Team and Bob Mann R3 Purple Team. They spent 7 long days in Ottawa, coaching, mentoring and motivating their teams through 4 days of 3-a-day sessions on the court and then 3 more days of competition.
The results of all this hard work gave our region two medals. The R3 Purple Girls Team earned a Silver Medal and the R3 White Boys held on to bring home the Bronze.
Congrats to FCVC's Dimitri Kantzos and Darryl Shank who won a hard fought Bronze medal match on the Beach. Their Mom's are still sweeping up sand from their gym bags.
The Regional and Summer Games are a great opportunity for U15 and U16 athletes to participate in volleyball at the next level where they have a chance to train and compete with some of the best in the province and in the country.
Good luck to everyone over the next season.

The Ken Davies Award is presented annually to male athlete who demonstrates the qualities of determination, leadership, athletic ability and sportsmanship. Click here for more information on the Ken Davies award & past recipients.
Ontario Volleyball would like to congratulate the 2005 Ken Davies Award recipients Devin Atkinson, member of the Forest City VBC and Josh Nederveen, member of Mountain Athletic VBC.
Devin is exactly what this award is about. He is an excellent student, an outstanding player and an exceptional human being. He has been an OFSAA Champion in 2 sports and is the captain and leader of the Forest City 18U team. One of Devin's Coaches describes him as having "a rare combination of athletic ability and personal maturity".
Josh is described by his Head Coach as "a quiet leader who demands and receives the respect of his fellow players through his passion and drive to be successful". Also excelling in two sports, Josh has proven that success and accomplishments are not a result of physical stature, but rather hard work determination.
The OVA Executive, volunteers and staff, would like to congratulate Devin & Josh on this worthy accomplishment.
